Effective way of showing that metal objects expand when heated and contract when cooled. A brass ball which will just fit through a brass ring at room temperature is heated and it expands. At its new larger size it cannot fit through. It is then placed on top of the ring and as it cools its diameter decreases until it drops through the hoop.
